My name is David Cook and I am a Utah bankruptcy lawyer. I believe that when you choose someone to represent that it can be helpful to know a little bit about them, their background and maybe even a glimpse in to what makes them tick. So, I’m going to tell you a little about me and hope this information will help you to know me a little better, what I care about and who I am.
I am the youngest of six children, three older brothers and two older sisters. I grew up in Salt Lake City and I attended Ensign School, Bryant Junior High and East High School. I have to credit my father for teaching me how to work – although I didn’t feel thankful while he was teaching me. And I have to credit my mother for teaching me how to care about others. After High School, I served an LDS mission in Thailand for two years. After I returned home, I worked full time while studying Organizational Communications at the University of Utah and graduated with a B.A. in 1991. Soon after, wife, Nora, and I decided it was time for an adventure and we took our young family to South Dakota for law school. I graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1994. You might be interested to know that while there, I was the President of the Student Bar Association. After graduating from law school, we moved our family back home to Utah.
It was while studying in law school that I decided to become a bankruptcy attorney and I am glad I did. I felt then, and I feel now, that this is how I can make a difference for good in people’s lives. The stress and harm that results from unfortunate and unplanned financial circumstances can be life changing, threaten families relationships and threaten one’s health. The abuse at the hands of some creditors and collection agencies is inexcusable and intolerable.
Bankruptcy is a nasty sounding word. It has negative connotation in many circles. But, the fact is that the Federal Bankruptcy laws were enacted not to hurt but to heal the wounds of adverse financial events in people’s lives. I see the benefits, the relief and the healing that the bankruptcy laws can bring to those in distress every day. Helping people brings me great satisfaction.
